Find space to be alone with God
This rule is a natural extension of the one that comes before it. Your relationship with God is in many ways just like any other relationship you have. It takes time, intention, and cultivation. Offering thanks for the blessings in your life is one of the ways to acknowledge and appreciate the life-giving relationship you have with God. Now, the extension of that is to find time and space to enjoy Godâs company and companionship. Invest in your relationship by setting aside a piece of each day to be alone with Godâdare to go on some dates! Take God out for a nice long walk along the beach, for a drive through the mountains, or on a bike ride down the street. Things do seem to be getting serious, after all!
Buy a copy of the Book of Common Prayer. You will then discover that the book isnât just for Sundays. There is a section called âDaily Devotions for Individuals and Families.â There is a fifteen-minute or so abridged Morning Prayer that you could use. It is great for those times when you are in a rush. Another helpful resource is the Daily Prayer for All Seasons2âit is a journey through the church calendar with a short, manageable liturgy for eight moments in the day (individuals are encouraged to do at least one of those moments: groups might prefer the full monastic regime).
This time can look like many thingsâprayer, exploring Scripture, enjoying nature, or a host of other things. Think about your journey to faith and what brought you to that place of transcendence and spiritual awakening. Those parts of your journey can be helpful here in finding ways to spend time with God. The trick is to do it each day. Thereâs no such thing as a spiritual piggy bank or roll-over minutes, so you canât collect bonus points to save up for a day off. This is the nitty-gritty, in-and-out, daily battle for your heart and soul.
